How the Pandemic Changed Our Cat

Luna now plays with toys, comes when we call, watches us work and mimics our yoga moves

Like so many of us, I’m home now, all the time. To be honest I worked from home before the pandemic, but I was lucky to travel for work so I was in and out a lot. Now I’m just here. All the time.

We’ve had Luna, our 10-year-old tabby, since she was a kitten, bonded to Hopper, an older cat we rescued. Luna has always had an independent streak. She doesn’t cuddle, sit on laps or like to be picked up — ever.

Soon after the pandemic started and we were relegated to our 700 square foot apartment, Luna seemed to just stare at us a bit more. She’d lurk around corners almost wondering why we were still there.

Like animal behaviorists who noticed pets behaving differently, Luna was changing before our eyes. She slowly started to hang out with us more, walking next to us in the hallway, purring and meowing, knocking a toy down the hallway.

Today, almost a year later, gone are Luna’s sideways looks, the evasiveness. She’s by our side all the time.

She openly jumps up and plants herself on my desk and watches me work, which at first was very odd but now I love having her close.

She’s also seemingly taken up yoga. The second Frank puts his blanket on the floor to stretch she joins him, copying his moves.

She sits with us on the couch, comes running down the hall when call her and openly catches toys when we toss them to her.

While she’s still not a cuddler, she now wants to be with us, wherever we are. The pandemic changed everything. For Luna, it changed her for the better.

So many life changes. I write about this new, constant midlife-awakening buzz to create; turning 'stuck' into 'movement’; and my passion for animals.
